I f you want to discover tranquility as well as hospitality, Niue is the place. The scenic and isolated pacific island is situated 2.400 kilometres north of New Zealand. After 73 years under New Zealand, Niue gained independence in 1974 with an elected premier as head of government. The bilingual population now consists of approximately 2.200 inhabitants.

LA9GY Morten, with XYL Margit and their daughters Ellen (5) and Elisabeth (1) visited Niue for the first time during autumn 1994. With radio equipment from Club Bouvet they stayed at Niue Hotel. After three pleasant weeks, Morten could refer to more than 6.400 QSOs in his log.

This journey certainly gave a taste for more, and by Easter 1996 it was time for another journey to the Pacific Ocean. This time the destination was Tonga (A3). Unfortunately the conditions in Tonga was not as anticipated, and the entire party moved quickly to the neighbour island ---- Niue.

The solar activity during 1996 was not as good as in 1994, and this time only 2.100 HF-QSOs were recorded in the course of ten days.

Niue is still a tempting place for an anxious radio amateur, and our goal is once again to become active as ZK2ZE.
